Consultant sought to ‘refine’ specifications for new BRT busses

The City of Johannesburg is looking to appoint an engineering consultant to determine the preferred bus specifications for the second phase of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

Project head Jacques van Zijl said that a lot had been learned from the roll-out of the project’s first phase of the inner-city service, which had tight deadlines ahead of the 2010 FIFA Confederations Cup in June-2009, followed by the FIFA World Cup a year later.

“We will aim to refine the specifications used on the first set of buses,” Van Zijl said.

It is expected that the new buses would retain most of their ‘older siblings’ characteristics, such as the low-entry and high exits, while also keeping the greener engines, in line with Euro IV standards.

South African fuel producers currently work to Euro II and Euro III standards, while the Euro IV diesel engines, use low-sulphur diesel comprising 50 parts per million of sulphur.

The higher the Euro specification, the cleaner the fuel.

Van Zijl said that public opinion on the functionality and specifications of the buses would be taken into account in the consultation process.

Simple changes, like installing wiring harnesses, will also be considered. Wire harnesses secure wires and cables against the effects of vibrations, abrasions and moisture, decrease the risk of a short and reduce installation time.

Van Zijl emphasised that the second phase would have a strong focus on local participation, in line with the latest Industrial Policy Action Plan released last year.

The speedy roll-out of the first phase of the BRT resulted in the majority of the fleet being imported from Brazil fully built up, and consequently, low local participation was obtained in a country struggling with high unemployment rates.

“This time around, we are not chasing those tight deadlines and local content will definitely be focused on and improved,” Van Zijl said.
